Chronic Diarrhea in a Horse: Finding a Deeper Cause in the Past

Monty, a 26-year-old gelding, had lived with chronic diarrhea for eight years. Free fecal water kept returning, always worse in winter, bringing endless washing and skin care in freezing weather. Antibiotics helped only briefly, while supplements and changes to his feed brought no lasting improvement. In this account from my practice, I explore what I perceived as a connection between his ongoing health difficulties and unresolved tension in his surroundings, and the changes reported after we worked with that emotional history.

Equine Therapy and Animal Communication

Eight years of chronic diarrhea in a 26-year-old gelding, and a search for a deeper cause in the past.

Monty is a 26-year-old gelding. His owner has had him since he was six. Twenty years together. One horse. One owner.

A Connection Between Souls

A deep bond, great sensitivity, and a strong connection.

And eight years of chronic diarrhea and free fecal water.

This was an ongoing condition, not an occasional problem. Winter was always the hardest time.

There was constant washing with warm water, towel drying, and trying to protect his skin. In freezing weather, a hose was not an option. Sometimes there were two quiet days, then the watery discharge returned.

Antibiotics helped only briefly. Smecta did not stop the diarrhea. They tried probiotics, herbs, minerals, feed adjustments, and repeated visits from an equine dentist.

Expenses ran into the thousands. Eight years of difficulty.

Monty was eating. He was not underweight. He managed within the herd. Yet his digestion remained unsettled, and to me, he seemed unsettled as well.

Gradually, another concern emerged.

A Feeling That It Was Time to Leave

His owner began to sense a message from him: that he wanted to leave.

With a 26-year-old horse, that was not something she could take lightly. She feared his body could no longer recover.

She was exhausted, emotionally and financially, and truly did not know what to do next.

Looking Back to Where It Began

In our work together, we returned to events eight years earlier. At that time, a serious conflict had developed between Monty’s owner and the stable owner.

There was tension, pressure, and unresolved emotion. Monty was part of that story and that environment.

His first digestive problems had appeared around the same time. They continued from then on, becoming worse in winter and never completely going away.

His owner still carried pain and tension from the situation. In my intuitive experience, Monty carried his own part of it.

I sensed him holding on, unable to let go, remaining loyal to his owner. I understood this as his body carrying something that had not been processed energetically.

My Therapeutic Work and Animal Communication

We held two sessions:

  • A remote session focused entirely on Monty
  • An in-person session with his owner

We revisited the situation from eight years earlier and found what I experienced as a deeper root of the problem.

The tension between his owner and the stable owner eased. In my understanding of the work, a knot in that relationship that had remained for eight years began to unravel.

His owner also let go of something she had carried for a long time.

And I sensed that Monty could release those old energies, too. 🙏

My understanding of his feeling of “I want to leave” changed. I no longer experienced it as a wish to leave life, but as a need to finally let go of an old burden.

Changes in the Stable, the Herd, and Monty’s Body

After the sessions, gradual changes were reported:

  • A calmer atmosphere between Monty’s owner and the stable owner
  • A different overall feeling in the stable
  • Changes in Monty’s behavior within the herd
  • Less noticeable tension

Alongside these changes, his digestion and bowel movements began to stabilize.

There were no new medications, additional supplements, or further major expenses.

A Month Later

The change did not happen overnight, but it did come.

At the one-month follow-up, described as a month without veterinary medication, his owner wrote:

“Monty has been off diarrhea medication for at least a week, and he’s clean! His manure is still a bit like a cow pat, but he has a clean little horse butt. ❤️ Thank you so much for your help. 🙏🙏🙏 Thank yooou! ❤️🤩🌟🌸🍀🫶”

Chronic diarrhea in a horse: therapeutic work exploring a perceived deeper cause of a health problem

After eight years of chronic trouble, Monty was reported to be passing firm, formed manure.

For Monty and his owner, that was an enormous change.

Above all, Monty was still here. The feeling that he was leaving had passed. He could enjoy his well-earned retirement. To me, his body, energy, and soul seemed more at peace. 💜🙏

Equine Therapy and Long-Held Burdens

I experienced this story as an invitation to explore how a horse’s health difficulties may sit alongside emotional history.

In my work, I sometimes explore:

  • Unresolved conflict
  • Relationships at the stable
  • Long-standing tension between people
  • A horse’s deep loyalty to its owner

In my experience, when an owner releases difficult emotions, a horse may seem able to let go as well.

In this case, the reported physical improvement followed that emotional shift. 💜

When You Truly Don’t Know What Else to Do

Perhaps you feel you have tried everything: veterinarians, supplements, feed changes, examinations, and consultations.

Perhaps you have spent thousands. Perhaps you are more tired than you want to admit. And perhaps, deep down, you are beginning to feel helpless.

Chronic health problems are not a failure—yours or your horse’s.

Sometimes they lead us to explore a broader picture, including emotional experiences as well as the body.

I work with horses and their owners to explore what may lie beneath an ongoing difficulty and the emotional burdens surrounding it.

Gently, with care, and with full respect for veterinary treatment.
